So What Exactly Does a Fuel Separator Do?

It all comes down to maintaining healthy fuel pressure and filtration under heavy application. When you're in cruise control on a city highway, your stock fuel pump shouldn't have a problem with this. However, under any sort of heavy application such as towing or off-roading, you need a fuel system that proactively eliminates contaminants to feed your injectors a purer, more consistent fuel supply.
When you're bumping over rough terrain and taking tight turns, you can imagine the fuel in your fuel tank is sloshing around and creating all sorts of problems for your fuel supply. The problem is, your stock fuel pump simply lacks the technology to effectively remove contaminants such as dirt, debris, water, air, and vapor from your fuel supply, thus creating inconsistent fuel pressure and delivering contaminated fuel to your injectors.
Simply put, high performance applications demand a higher fuel flow, yet higher fuel flow strengthens the vacuum at the fuel pump and agitates the fuel tank. The added air/vapor generated in this process contributes to less than optimal power and efficiency, as well as galling and pitting of your injector barrel assembly and tip erosion. Typically, an air fuel separator draws fuel from the tank and sends it through a water separator, removing large particulates. Then, fuel under positive pressure flow enters the fuel filter and passes through the filter where any remaining particulate contaminates are removed and any entrained air/vapor is separated.
