2011-2014 F150 EcoBoost Spark Plugs
Maximizing the performance of your 2011-2014 F150 3.5L EcoBoost means you need to have high-quality spark plugs with the correct spark plug gaps. New spark plugs that are correctly gapped allows your F150 EcoBoost to deliver power more effectively and reliably. Why the heck would I need spark plugs?
It's a good question and one that we get very often. The EcoBoost F150s, especially the 2011 and 2012 model years, did not come with very good spark plugs and they're gapping could easily be all over the place. We've seen gaps ranging from .034" to .048" on plugs out of the same motor. Whether this was a factory oversight or a massive mixup at Ford dealerships, we honestly don't know. In general, the weak spark plugs and their weird gapping generally don't cause a problem with the factory tune during day-to-day driving. After tuning your truck, the story changes entirely. Sputtering, a loss of power, bucking, and shaking like the truck and its EcoBoost motor are coming apart are all caused by spark blowout which results from using custom tuning with the stock plugs. The only solution is new plugs. The folks over at 5-Star strongly and solely recommend the Ford Motorcraft SP-534 spark plugs gapped down to .034" for stock trucks or .030" for tuned vehicles. The gapping is extremely important and is the key thing you must do to get your truck working again.If you're not a huge fan of Motorcraft plugs, or if your tuner of choice recommends something else, we also have NGK Iridium Plugs available in both stock heat range and one step colder heat range to meet your needs. These, too, will all have to be gapped down to specs to ensure proper performance. Either follow your tuner's gapping advice or go off of our gapping specs for the Motorcraft plugs.
Now, all of these plugs use iridium tips which are are extremely brittle, and while they can handle high heat and pressure, they don't like getting nicked or tapped by feeler tools or clumsy gapping. Be very careful when gaping them down!
