The two turbochargers attached to your 2011-2014 F150's EcoBoost V6 is the biggest reason why your mighty F150 makes so much power, which is why throwing some upgrades their way or totally replacing them with upgraded turbochargers can get your F150 huge power and performance. Turbosmart's EcoBoost Blow-Off Valves and You!
Forgive the corny title. Some of our most popular F150 EcoBoost turbo system upgrades are Turbosmart's Kompact Dual-Port BOVs. These little guys are pretty easy, drop-in replacements for the pretty flimsy plastic factory bypass valves and are designed to help your turbo system hold more boost and give your truck an awesome sound when you let off the throttle. Even though these BOVs are pretty basic (though high-quality) upgrades, we get a TON of questions about them that we're hoping to clear up right here:How are these different from what's already on my truck?
Your EcoBoost F150 comes with a bypass valve (BPV) for each turbocharger. The BPVs work by venting turbo system pressure back into your truck's intake system via an air line and port. A BOV, by technical definition, vents excess pressure and air simply out in your engine bay in a process called vent to atmosphere (or VTA). Now, the Turbosmart Kompacts are actually dual-port BOVs which means they vent to atmosphere and recirculate to help avoid any drivability issues while providing the aggressive sound of a true BOV.
How easy are these to install?
Extremely easy, though they're much easier to install with the front wheels off the truck. If you have long arms and some decent socket extensions, you can probably get away with leaving the front wheels on. The BOVs themselves drop right into place of the factory BPVs very easily. Do these BOVs need adjusting?
No... but yes... maybe. I know that's not very helpful. 90% of the time these blow-off valves can be installed without any adjustments to their soft/firm settings. Out of the box, they should be set at a 50/50 firmness setting that ought to be fine for stock EcoBoost trucks, trucks with bolt-ons, or even trucks with a few mild bolt-ons and custom tuning. Really aggressive F150 builds with a ton of parts and aggressive tunes will probably need to set them firmer to hold extra boost pressure. Our recommendation is to install them without adjustments and quite literally play it by ear. If you're getting stalling or backfiring, then the BOVs need to be set firmer to hold in pressure. If you're getting turbo flutter, then you'll need to set them softer so pressure can be released and not cause compressor stall. All that being said, there's not much to worry about and most EcoBoost owners can throw these on their truck as soon as they land at the door. Can I use the 2011 to 2012 TurboSmart BOVs on my 2013 to 2014 F150
Nope. In 2013, Ford started using a single, remote-mounted electronic BOV instead of two turbo-mounted mechanical BOVs like the 2011 and 2012 EcoBoost F150s. However, our good friends over at Turbosmart have released their 2013-2016 F150 3.5L EcoBoost Turbosmart BOV Kit that will give you that wicked BOV sound. Check out our install video below.
Full-Race's Drop-In Turbochargers
With the F150 3.5L EcoBoosts now being out in the world a few years, there's now more than a few potent upgraded turbocharger options available on the market, one of the better of them is Full-Race's Drop-In Upgraded Turbocharger Kit. This turbocharger upgrade kit comes with two complete turbocharger assemblies that feature a redesigned compressor wheel that flows more air than stock, giving you a nice power bump that allows you to push your 3.5L EcoBoost V6 to its full potential, especially when combined with other bolt-on performance parts and custom tuning from 5-Star. Full-Race's upgraded turbo kit doesn't require you to return your factory cores and aside from the upgraded compressor, use new OEM parts, allowing you to reuse your stock coolant and oil lines without any other modifications. The turbos can come with an optional Walbro 450lph In-Tank Fuel Pump Upgrade, which is recommended for folks running a lot of bolt-ons or who have F150 EcoBoosts with a lot of miles and some wear and tear on their factory fuel pumps.
